McMahon & Mann Consulting Engineers, P.C. (MMCE) worked with Wendel Duchscherer to develop alternatives for remediation of several slope failures along Hopkins Road in the Town of Amherst. In five locations between Schoelles Road and Tonawanda Creek Road, the east bank of Ransom Creek has sloughed, affecting the adjacent Hopkins Road pavement. In some of these locations the pavement has experienced cracks that the Erie County DPW has filled. In other areas, the bank sloughing has extended as far as the road centerline, leaving a scarp in the center of the road.

Wendel Duchscherer and MMCE developed design recommendations for remediating the conditions. MMCE also was engaged to develop comparative cost estimates for the remediation options. MMCE’s activities included:

  • Drilling nine test borings and measuring the strength of the soils in the boreholes using an in-situ vane shear device,
  • Evaluated the stability of the existing slope areas, and
  • Developed recommendations and construction cost estimates for remedial options.
