McMahon & Mann Consulting Engineering and Geology

Since 1993, McMahon & Mann Consulting Engineering and Geology, P.C. (McMahon & Mann) has provided civil engineering consultation and design services for geotechnical, subsurface environmental and solid waste projects throughout New York and the eastern United States. The firm’s staff of eighteen includes nine professional engineers and one professional geologist. The firm maintains  Certificates of Authority to provide engineering and geology services in New York State.

It is relatively rare to find such a sizable group of engineers in one firm concentrating on geotechnical assignments. As a result of their experience and their past performance, the people at McMahon & Mann have become recognized for their accomplishments in the field and are regularly retained by private industry, architects, engineers and contractors, as well as public agencies at various levels of government and property owners seeking advice.

Over 30 Years Of Experience In Engineering and Geology

Our philosophy

McMahon & Mann prides itself on its dynamic approach to problem solving, stressing the development of relationships with clients who share that philosophy. That means early involvement to define the scope of the project and develop a budget. The work phases that follow typically involve conceptual planning, design development, subsurface exploration, testing, analysis and design, construction and monitoring, with McMahon & Mann engineers, both in the office and at the job site, involved at each stage. This approach fosters development of a true design/construction team that lends continuity to the work on each project.

Ken Fishman

Dr. Fishman is a Principal at McMahon & Mann Consulting Engineering and Geology, P.C. and serves as the leader of the ERTesting Division. Dr. Fishman has spent the last twenty-five years implementing test techniques and developing a recommended practice and protocols for evaluation and condition assessment of earth reinforcements. This experience is an outgrowth of his participation on research projects supported by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), which is a federal research agency affiliated with the National Academy of Sciences. As a Co-Principal Investigator for NCHRP Project 24-13 he assessed test methods and developed the testing protocols for condition assessment and evaluation of earth reinforcements. Further research as the Principal Investigator for NCHRP Project 24-28 was to evaluate sources of uncertainty with respect to observations and estimates of metal loss; and the reliability of service lives targeted in design. NCHRP Project 21-11 “Improved Test Methods and Practices for Characterizing Steel Corrosion Potential of Earthen Materials,” was completed in 2020 where Dr. Fishman, the Principal Investigator and co-workers evaluated different test techniques for measurement of electrochemical parameters for soils and aggregate type fill materials, and developed a protocol for sampling, testing and characterizing corrosivity of various types of earthen materials. As a result of this work, he is familiar with a number of techniques for corrosion monitoring and performance monitoring of earth reinforcements and is very familiar with the performance history of such systems as documented in the literature.
