McMahon & Mann managed the subsurface exploration program and developed foundation recommendations for a six-story medical office building with two levels of underground parking on the Buffalo Medical Campus.

Test borings and monitoring wells revealed that groundwater beneath the site is contaminated with volatile organic compounds. Remediation required excavation and disposal of the contaminated soil. Provided design recommendations for supporting the building on spread footings.

McMahon & Mann prepared design plans for excavation shoring that consists of a 25-foot high sheet pile wall with tieback supports. The tieback design considered the proximity of the surrounding structures including the Buffalo Rapid Transit Tunnel under Main Street and the planned new Women and Children’s Hospital east of the office building.

The sheet pile wall serves a dual purpose in that it serves as the permanent basement wall for the two-story underground parking garage. After the excavation was complete the wall was sandblasted and painted as shown in the photo of the underground garage.
