A residential developer needed to construct a sewerage pump station for its project and hired FPS to construct shoring for the excavation. FPS engaged McMahon & Mann to explore the subsurface conditions and design a support system for the excavation.

Subsurface explorations revealed a very soft clay deposit (300 pounds per square foot) extending for most of the excavation depth of about 30 feet and ground water confined in the rock about 10 feet below the excavation base.

We used a field vane to measure the strength of the soft clay in a test boring and used these data to design the sheet piles, wales and struts. FPS drove the sheet piles into the underlying glacial till to prevent the excavation base from heaving. FPS successfully constructed the excavation support system, as designed.
