Hopkins Road Slope Remediation

Several slope failures occurred along the east bank of Ransom Creek damaging five locations between Schoelles Road and Tonawanda Creek Road. McMahon & Mann completed a stability analysis to determine the amount of improvement that was required to support the reconstructed roadway.

Several slope failures occurred along the east bank of Ransom Creek damaging five locations between Schoelles Road and Tonawanda Creek Road, the east bank of Ransom Creek had sloughed, affecting the adjacent Hopkins Road pavement. In some of these locations the pavement has experienced cracks that the Erie County DPW has filled. In other areas, the bank sloughing has extended as far as the road centerline, leaving a scarp in the center of the road. Subsurface explorations indicated that a thick deposit of soft clay was beneath the road.

McMahon & Mann developed design recommendations for remediating the soft clay conditions. Mixing dry cement with the soft clay soils to increase the strength and decrease the compressibility of the soft clay deposit was the selected remediation. We completed stability analysis to determine the amount of improvement that was required to support the reconstructed roadway. Based on the stability analysis, we developed design plans requiring the installation of 792 soil-cement columns in three of the five failure locations. We provided construction monitoring services throughout the project. The project was completed in the Spring 2015.
