The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) designed a new bridge for Borden Road over Buffalo Creek. The excavation for the north abutment required shoring to support about 18 feet of soil and to protect the adjacent property.
The shoring design was complicated by the necessity to keep the interior of the excavation clear of bracing so that the contractor could construct the abutment without interference from the bracing.
McMahon & Mann developed a design that used sheet piling pinned to the rock and both internal and external bracing. Anchors and deadmen were used to provide lateral support along one wall of the cofferdam and internal struts and wales supported the remaining walls.
