Oakgrove Construction, Inc. Corporation (Oakgrove) was engaged to rehabilitate the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge and part of its contract required the design and installation of a sound barrier along the approach to the bridge on the U.S. side. Oakgrove engaged McMahon & Mann to design the sound barrier foundations.

McMahon & Mann engaged a test boring firm to drill borings along the alignment of the sound wall. The borings revealed that the bridge approach had been built on rubble fill covering bedrock.

We designed the sound barrier with concrete posts and panels. The foundations are drilled shafts extending into the rubble fill. We used the computer program LPILE to estimate lateral deflections of the foundations.

The 704-foot long wall ranges from 12.5 to 14.5 feet high.
