Brayman Construction Corporation (Brayman) was engaged to design and construct sound barriers along both sides of State Route (SR) 28 near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as part of a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) design-build project to improve SR 28. PennDOT provided soil boring data and design criteria. Brayman was awarded the project and engaged McMahon & Mann to design the sound barriers.

We analyzed the soil property information provided by PennDOT to design drilled shaft foundations that support the concrete panels and concrete posts. We also used the computer program LPILE to estimate the amount of lateral deflection that the drilled shafts would experience from the applied loads.

The total length of both northbound and southbound walls is about 1500 feet. The wall height ranges from 8 to 20 feet.
