McMahon & Mann and Bergmann teamed to complete an engineering assessment of the Albion Waste Gate and Weir located on the Erie Canal in Albion, New York. The structure consists of concrete and masonry walls with operable gates to allow for canal water release in adition to a spillway section, all of which direct canal waters into an adjacent stream that flows beneath the canal through a two barrel culvert.

Following the assessment, it was determined that the structure would require significant concrete rehabiliation, including elements to provide stability and mitigate seepage. The team developed construction plans and specifications to reface and replace concrete surfaces, install tensioned rock anchors to provide stability, install chemical grouting in the surrounding embankment materials behind the structure's wing walls and install a drilled in concrete secant pile wall to address adjacent streambank stability.

The team continued to work with the Contractors and Resident Engineer throughout construction to address field changes and review and document the installation of several features which are not common during normal concrete refacing projects. This included observing and documenting the anchor installation and tensioning, monitoring and establishing chemical grouting procedures and observing the construction of the secent pile wall.
